Geometric Pool, Spa & Fire Pit in Sterling Ridge, The Woodlands
A 30' x 15' A squared-off pool and raised spa on the upper deck, a fire-pit lawn on the level below, and a stacked-stone water wall between them — built under the pine canopy in the Village of Sterling Ridge.
The Design
Sterling Ridge lots come with mature pine and hardwood canopy, and this one came with a grade change as well — the back of the property sits noticeably lower than the house. Rather than truck in fill and flatten it, we built on both levels. The pool and its travertine deck hold the upper terrace; two broad travertine steps drop to a lawn below.
The pool is straight-lined and squared off, which sits better against the architecture than a freeform would and makes full use of a rectangular yard. A raised spa anchors one end and spills into the main body. Along the far side, a stacked-stone wall carries four sheer-descent spillways — enough sound and movement to fill the yard without the bulk of a waterfall structure competing with the trees behind it.
The Lower Lawn
The lower level is where the backyard gets used after the swimming stops. An L-shaped seating wall wraps two sides — stacked stone base, smooth cap wide enough to actually sit on — with a stacked-stone fire pit and tempered fire glass at the center.
The whole lower level is artificial turf, and under this much canopy that's the practical call rather than the easy one. Real grass thins out fast in Woodlands shade, and what survives tracks mud onto travertine every time someone crosses from the fire pit to the pool. Turf stays green through August and through January.

Travertine runs across the upper deck and down the steps, so the two levels read as one space rather than a patio and a yard. The seat wall and fire pit share the same stacked stone as the water wall, which is what keeps a backyard with this many separate elements from looking assembled out of parts.
