Freeform Pool & Patio Cover in Needville, TX
A 39′6″ × 22′ freeform gunite pool and a 13′ × 20′ covered patio for a country home on 2.5 acres, set among mature oaks southwest of Houston.
The Design
The house sits on 2.5 acres ringed by mature oaks — the kind of lot where a pool either looks dropped in or looks like it was always there. We laid out a kidney shape with soft edges that echo the tree line instead of cutting against it, and kept the long axis turned away from the house so the water reads as part of the landscape from the back door.
Water features spill into the deep end, adding movement and sound without the upkeep of a full waterfall wall. The shallow end opens onto a wide entry step that doubles as a shelf for chairs once the heat sets in.
The Patio Cover
Instead of a freestanding structure set off on its own, we tied a 13′ × 20′ cover directly into the home's existing roofline. Matching the pitch and the fascia means it reads as original construction rather than something added later — the detail most people can't name but always notice.
The ceiling is stained cedar tongue-and-groove with recessed lighting set flush into it. Cedar holds up to Gulf Coast humidity better than most softwoods and warms up under evening light, and recessing the fixtures keeps the ceiling line clean with nothing hanging down to date the space.
